Housing ESA letter

What a housing ESA letter can and cannot do.

An ESA housing letter may support a reasonable accommodation request when issued after appropriate licensed-professional evaluation. It is not a pet registration, certificate, ID card, or guaranteed outcome.

What is an ESA letter for housing?

An ESA letter for housing is documentation from a licensed professional that may support a renter's request for an accommodation related to an emotional support animal. The letter should be based on evaluation, not a registry purchase.

Who should write it?

A qualified licensed professional who can evaluate the request and satisfy state requirements. State licensure and the provider relationship matter, especially in states with extra rules.

What it cannot promise

  • It cannot guarantee approval by a landlord or housing provider.
  • It does not create airline travel rights.
  • It does not make an animal an ADA service animal.
  • It is not the same as an ESA certificate or registry listing.

When to start

Start when the request is about housing and you understand that evaluation is required. If your question is about public access, restaurants, stores, or flights, an ESA letter is not the right product.
